Mac Pro Migration

Permalink: 8/21/2006 05:56:00 PM | << Back Home

Reasons I upgraded to this machine:
a) Speed
b) Hoping to replace my Mac, and my PC
c) Didn't need to keep using a portable as a desktop
d) Expandability? Can probably add a second drive to use as a backup medium or RAID array.

Brought it home, plugged it in, hooked a FireWire 800 cable up between the PowerBook and the Mac Pro, and off the migration went!

I've never used that before, but I thought I'd give it a shot. It really does a great job!! The only thing I had to reconfigure was my Screen Saver, and all that was was reselecting it from the list. All of the Network, Desktop, and other System Preferences were there and set, and everything was just as I'd left it. Bravo Apple! Even my fonts and Applications had been copied.

So, it came time to setup "Bootcamp"... and get started with Windows. All I really use it for is Half-Life 2, but whatever!

The installation was pretty straight-forward. Download from http://www.apple.com/bootcamp/, Install from the Package, Run from the Utilities Folder in Applications, and follow the instructions. You'll need a Blank CD and also a Windows XP CD with Service Pack 2 on it. It will not work without SP2... I tried and got this:

So, as I *cough* download Windows XP w/ SP2 *cough*... I wait. Hopefully they'll let me Activate it with my legitimate serial number. Otherwise, I really think this is a fabulous machine and its definitely a great idea for anyone looking for serious power, flexibility, and the stability/great-features of Mac OS X. :)
