easily mod your PS2 in 30 minutes... (with no soldering!)

Permalink: 1/31/2005 05:13:00 AM

if you're like me you like to play imported and backed-up PS2 games... but don't feel like modding your PS2. I, myself, have busted two consoles trying to get away with putting a chip in minus the proper supplies. trust me, it sucks when that happens.

eventually I decided that I was going to go the chipless route and masterminded a very simple way to mod your system with just a roll of electrical tape and a few common screwdrivers.

overall... this took me about a half-an-hour to do, and the results are immediate.

I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOU OR YOUR PS2. You'd have to really mess this up for anything bad to happen... but just in case I'm saying this anyway. However, regardless if you break it or not, you will void your warranty if it hasn't run out yet. (or hasn't already been voided... hehe)

what you need:

First, you're going to need to buy a copy of SwapMagic. This is a special DVD that enables you to swap in a DVD-R disc with a game on it... or an imported title. It costs $25. For most people, this is the only purchase that needs to be made.

Next, you need to have the following items:
- A Standard 'Philips' Head Screwdriver (that's the '+' one)
- A Small 'Philips' Head Screwdriver... about half the size of the standard sized first one.
- A Small 'Blade' Head Screwdriver (that's the '-' one) or knife
- A roll of electrical tape (black is best). Duct tape or something else can be substituted... but electrical is recommended.
- A small plastic sandwich bag.

If you don't have these things... the total is probably going to be less than $10. Remember, this is much less expensive than modding a PS2 with a chip... and a lot less dangerous.

what you've gotta do:

Overall, this isn't very difficult and should only take about a half-an-hour, as mentioned earlier. I'm going to show you how to do it on a Version 4 PS2. (what version is my PS2?)

Step 1 is to unplug everything (cables, controllers, memory cards, etc.) If you have a hard drive or network card installed, you should not have to take them out. Next, pry up the little plates covering the case screws on the bottom of the unit with the blade screwdriver or very carefully with the knife. Then, unscrew all screws that were under each cover. This is generally 6 to 8 screws total. Store all covers and screws in the plastic bag.

You'll have to carefully cut through the tape holding through the case together on the back of the unit with the knife. This tells Sony that you've opened the case and voided your warranty. If you do not wish to continue, replace all screws, screw covers, and twiddle your thumbs. Cut carefully where there is a gap in the casing so that the knife is not damaging the case.

The top half and bottom half of the case should now separate. Carefully tilt the top half of the case backward as shown in the next image. Be very careful of the silver ribbon cable that's connected to the power and eject switches. On many PS2s it is taped to the top of the CD/DVD drive with a white sticker. Take the sticker off.

Now that the case is out of the way, and so is the silver ribbon cable... unscrew the 4 tiny screws on the top of the CD/DVD drive with the smaller Philips head screwdriver. Store these screws in the plastic bag.

This allows disc-swapping access to the CD/DVD drive by removing the top cover.

Place the CD/DVD drive's top cover back on the driver properly and place the top half of the case back on the PS2. Make sure that the silver ribbon cable is not caught on the CD/DVD drive, bent, or squished in any strange way. It is very delicate and needs to be handled with care.

Get out the electrical tape... we're going to use it to keep the case together and for easy swapping access!

Apply two 3 or 4 inch pieces of electrical tape as shown. Apply the left piece to the bottom of the unit, then fold it over up onto the back. This will hold the top and bottom halves of the case together on that side. Do the same on the right side of the unit, but instead just apply the entire piece without any folding. (you'll fold it to separate the halves) Fold a tiny bit at the top of each piece down over the sticky side to make it easier to pull the tape off a single half of the case when swapping discs.

Last, apply a long piece of tape under the DVD/CD drive but above the USB/iLink connectors as shown. This is barely visible if you're using black tape, and allows the top and bottom halves of the case to swing apart when the pieces of tape on the back are folded down.

Ta-da! This allows you to swap discs for just $25. (unless you had to buy supplies... but then again it's still pretty cheap)

I've attached a short MPEG-4 video of me using the SwapDisc to load a backed-up copy of "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas". You'll need Quicktime to view it.

3. After the file has completed downloading, please leave your download windows open for as long as possible to help seed the file to others.

cherry vs. coca-cola icee drinks

as many of you know... I frequently visit Burger King for a whopper or angus burger. usually I get a "cherry icee" drink... which is like cherry flavored snow that's easily drunk through a straw. I first got these at the movies but since BK's got them... I always get one instead of a fountain drink now.

until tonight I always got the cherry ones... but tonight I went with the coke flavor 'cause the cherry one has kind of a nasty after-taste. the coke ones are awesome... so I'm definitely going to recommend these to everyone. it tastes just like the soda minus the carbonation but with the slight sting of snow. it's awesome.

there was no point to this post.. but seriously the coke ones are better... haha.

Mac Mini vs. Airport Extreme/Express?

Permalink: 1/14/2005 03:01:00 AM

With Apple's recent release of the Mac Mini for just $499, the following question arises in my mind: Why buy an Airport Extreme ($199) or Airport Express base station ($129) when the Mac Mini can do so much more? Price aside, the Mac Mini soars past the capabilties of the others.

Any Mac running Mac OS X can act as a simple wireless base station if it has an Airport card installed. Most Macs can run iTunes, and have a Modem, Ethernet, and Internet Sharing Capabilties. (as well as firewall capabilties built-right-into the OS) Most Macs can also share Printers with other users on a network... just as an Airport Base Station can.

Well, when I say "Most Macs"... the Mac Mini can do *all* of these things... as well as thousands more! Not only can it act as a file server for Windows/Mac/Unix/the Internet, an iTunes server, an iPhoto server, a WEB server, and a Print server, but it can play DVDs and music... as well as display photos... on a nearby LCD, Plasma TV, or computer monitor. (via a DVI or VGA hookup on most models... Apple also offers an S-Video/Composite adapter if you're looking to hook it up to any other type of TV)

Why didn't they call it the XServe Mini? Installing Mac OS X Server brings even more server-related functionality. Plus, using it as an Internet Connection Sharing server for the house places the system in the perfect place on the network to act as a web-based server... accessable to millions if you so desire. (much of this functionality is also available in home versions of Mac OS X as well... such as the ability to run your own website)

But what about the AirTunes functionality offered with Airport Express base stations? If you don't have a monitor/keyboard/mouse hooked up, throw a copy of "Share My Desktop" (free) onto the Mac Mini and remote control the computer from another Mac with VNCViewer (free). Your Mac Mini can also be controlled from Windows and Unix-based machines with similar "VNC viewer" applications.

You can dock and charge, and sync your iPod in the living room now by just plugging it into the back of the Mac... and sync your music as well by using your iTunes library remotely through a network share.

Who needs an iPod Photo to hook up to your TV when you can just open iPhoto on the Mac Mini and get that Ken Burns Effect? :)

Did I mention that it's also a full-blown Mac? For all this it seems like a real bargain... especially when considering an Airport Base Station instead.

The Mac Mini is about the same size as the Airport Extreme Base Station... so I guess it just depends on what kind of functionality you'd like, and how much you want to spend.

All in all, the Mac Mini has a LOT of potential. (I've heard about people putting them in their cars... more on this later if I end up doing that, too. *wink*)

treo 650 GSM model around the corner...

One more thing for today... after anxiously awaiting the Treo 650 for GSM phone networks... the wait will soon be over. I spoke on the phone with an inside friend at PalmOne about some reselling opportunities, and complained that the wait for this particular model was making a lot of people, including myself, frustrated. He perked right up and responded that "AT&T Wireless/Cingular will be making an announcement in a few weeks concerning the arrival of the Treo 650 to their line-up." ...Hooray. No news about T-Mobile or any of the smaller chains, but I'm sure they'll receive the device fairly soon as well.

I've been on my PC since my Mac left for AppleCare and I'm really sick of it. clearly this feature is for the computer idiot with a million toolbars installed on their IE... but not for me. there's no clear way to turn this off... but I made an effort to do so by switching my update settings from "automatic" to "download, then prompt me to install". Hopefully that will do the trick.

for my second and final dvd round-up... Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle and The Girl Next Door.

I. Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle
Rating: 2/5
This movie was mildly entertaining... but most of it was kind of stupid. They have a few funny moments and kind-of original plot... but it's kind of a waste of time.

II. The Girl Next Door
Rating: 4/5
This movie was great. Although it wasn't much of a thriller... it was still great with an original plot and a lot of crazy twists.

Well that's the end of my Netflix trial... yhep.

treo 650.... come on palm!!

Permalink: 1/03/2005 08:40:00 PM

I'm dying for a Treo 650. however, not only can I not afford it, it's not available for GSM yet. Why was Sprint given the only access? Verizon has more client (don't they?) and they're also on CDMA... but yet Sprint was the only one given the device for starters. Does anyone have any idea what the delay is? if you do, e-mail me.

It used to seem like the old AT&T Wireless got all of the best/newest/coolest phones first, but now that that's gone I'm surprised that Cingular wasn't the first to get the new Treo. Cingular was still the only place to get the "MOTO RAZR V3", though.

Why the wait, anyway? They're certainly making us anxious.

(P.S. To add to the excitement... someone just hacked Wi-Fi access onto the 650 using the SD card that Palm distributes for their Tungsten T5. Wewt. Really can't wait now.)

(see linked article) For example, the idiot technology department people at my old high-school. What morons! (ehm I know you guys read my blog.)

"If audiences in general are underestimated, kids really get the patronizing treatment. Two things are often forgotten about kids. One: They have no taste. They will watch just about anything. This is normal and healthy. Taste comes later. Two: They are not stupid! Kids are born intelligent, and there's no good reason to make dumbed-down entertainment for them."

I haven't really gathered my thoughts enough about this to make valid comments... but damn. Adults always think they have kids all figured out or think that they're more mature than the kids or what not... at least Pixar knows the truth. I will say that no two kids are alike behavior, knowledge, or taste-wise, but there's at least more there than most adults consider... even parents!

I'm thinking....

confirmed: the new "screen savers" sucks

Permalink: 1/01/2005 09:52:00 PM

A few days ago I blogged about how the new TSS (The Screen Savers) on G4TechTV is a disaster. (if you have no idea what I'm talking about, click-here to read my original post) HOWEVER... thank you, dan huard, for exposing all of the bullshit that's been going on. (he did the live call production, etc.) he also mentioned some of the scandals going on behind the scenes, such as the fake live calls he was instructed to produce. I've linked to his blog post at the bottom of this one.

see, what I love about his post is that he also expressed the fact that Chi-Lan Lieu (one of the new hosts) is an absolute moron. The show's completely ruined... I can't believe they were actually FAKING the live calls!! Yet, that's so G4... watch them cancel the show now due to lack of popularity..

Seriously, what was the point of the G4/TechTV merger... all G4 did was take all of the TechTV programming out of production and expect all of TechTV's viewers to watch their gamer-targeted crap. Now I have G4's old channel number and TechTV's channel number displaying the same crap. Everyone's completely pissed, including me!

I have to admit, I still TiVo the show and quick-skip through it in-case they have something cool on (kevin rose is still producing some segments, as far as I know, so there's bound to be SOMETHING interesting) but other than that the show, and the network (for that matter), completely suck and I really don't think that they're going to make it.
