Google (now with more AJAX)Permalink: 9/28/2005 11:14:00 AMI threw this together this morning with no real plans to release it, but I put it up on a sub-domain just for kicks. Basically, it's a Google search page powered by AJAX, so that you don't have to switch pages between your results. The only thing I coded were the search boxes/buttons on the main and results pages, all of the other links should send you back to Google. Give it a try, though. Like it? Digg it. "Labels hit back at Apple, now want share of iPod revenues"Permalink: 9/25/2005 06:43:00 PMI generally use the iTunes Music Store because I'll pay for convenience. However, price hikes would be enough to switch me back to P2P networks. I remember the reason I skipped the new Foo Fighters album was that it was priced around $18.98 -- too expensive. I'm sure most others feel the same way. I wonder how this will affect the unlimited subscriptions offered by Napster and Yahoo, as well as their pricing. Link Let's Hear It for My Friends' BandPermalink: 9/25/2005 10:42:00 AMThese guys I know (identical-twins Tyler and Lee) are in a band called "Clap your hands, Say Yeah"... they're actually doing pretty well. Today they've been written up in the NY Times. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - the name comes from graffiti in Brooklyn, home of the drummer Sean Greenhalgh; the guitarist and keyboardist Robbie Guertin; and Tyler and Lee Sargent, identical twins who play bass and guitar (Tyler) and keyboards (Lee) - lost its geeky personality over the summer and has become something of a phenomenon. The band is known as much for its music as for not signing with a record label. Backed by blogs, word of mouth and influential music Web sites, the band's shows in New York and Philadelphia were packed with shaggy-haired scene makers who were, if not clapping, nodding with utmost enthusiasm. The buzz even persuaded producers of "The O.C.," which is known for its indie rock soundtracks, to ask Clap Your Hands to perform on the show. The band turned it down. Too much popularity, after all, can diminish one's credibility. They were offered a contract with Columbia, which they turned down. (good move) Never deal with record labels. :) The article's linked, login required. Just login with this: thisisstupid950/password Link --- Thursday, September 22, 2005

WinMX Vanishes.Permalink: 9/21/2005 03:54:00 PMSo today's news is that the File Sharing program 'WinMX' (it's a classic, almost back to the Napster days) has disappeared and stopped working, most likely due to the letters that the RIAA/MPAA sent around. However, I and many others don't think it'll be gone for long. What people are forgetting or never knew about was that the WinMX software has been out-dated for some time. Secret betas were being tested behind the scenes of a rumored 'WinMX Version 4' that would blow people's minds. Could this be it? We might see it in as little as a few days. --- Tuesday, September 20, 2005
Nullsoft BeepPermalink: 9/20/2005 07:18:00 PM"Nullsoft Beep is an application that makes your computer sound like computers sound in the movies. It requires Windows 95 or later with DirectX 3 or later." Pretty cool. :) Link --- Wednesday, September 14, 2005
Free Stuff.Permalink: 9/14/2005 04:14:00 PMI'm trying to finish up the following offers, so if you're interested, sign-up with these links: free XBOX 360 free Digital Camera (sweet) free iPod Photo I've already done most of these free offers, and they actually work pretty well. These are just the few that I have lingering around and would like to finish-up. If you have any doubt, check out this previous post of mine. iPod Nanos sales are slow.Permalink: 9/14/2005 12:32:00 AMSummary: They're selling slowly... and the black ones are selling like hot-cakes compared to the classic iPod-white. Here's an interesting alternative product line-up: iPod Shuffle -- 1GB (240 songs) -- $99 iPod Mini (v2) -- 2GB (500 songs) -- $199 iPod Nano (black) -- 4GB (1000 songs) -- $249 iPod Classic -- 20GB+ (5,000 songs) -- $299 and up. The demand for the iPod Mini has increased... I expect them to become collectors items since they were never really revised (which would make them feel obsolete), and are so damn cool! The only significant change was the removal of the golden 'champagne' colored version. The form factor of the Nano isn't really enough to thrill me into buying one. The photo feature is stupid (as you can see, nobody cares about the lack of the TV-Out feature except the critics, since nobody uses it) and was proven with the lack of interest in the difference between the iPod and iPod photo... prompting Apple to merge the lines together as rumored as few months ago. On every single device I've owned that sported a photo viewing feature, other than my Powerbook, I've never used it. Nobody cares about it.. sitting on the subway looking at your photos makes you look like a weirdo, and it's socially awkward to show people your iPod's screen. -- Apple could add a camera to the iPod... a camera attachment could *easily* be developed by a third-party, even with the current iPod hardware and software. However, that's something extra to lose... or break.. and wouldn't sell with most cellphones having cameras these days. The interesting thing here is that the ROKR phone seems to have this area nailed, but the cellphone-iPod hybrid... or even just a generic music-phone gadget... seems a little too over-the-top to the casual consumer. I'd rather see a hybrid device that features a cellphone, rather than a cellphone that features other capabilities that probably don't work very well, or are limited. (take the 100 song restriction on the iTunes phone, for example) Plus-- the iTunes phone looks nothing like an iPod?? A while ago, I felt like Apple's getting sloppy with their hot product. In a way, the Nano has simplified the line-up. The Mini was damn cool, but with the introduction of the Shuffle, it made it the odd-ball product. Now that the Nano has been released as a hybrid between the two... the move makes sense, but the Minis were just so damn cool! Well, whatever. We'll get over it. Link --- Monday, September 12, 2005
Final Fantasy: Advent ChildrenPermalink: 9/12/2005 05:53:00 AMSquare Enix has been baiting us with this movie, and yesterday it was leaked! Yay... oh wait... we just have to wait for someone generous to spend the the translating the subtitles. (please?) I can barely understand the Japanese, but whatever. I don't want to wreck it... this is too cool a movie. This morning I took a break from this week's non-stop coding and threw together this render of myself under a rough replica of Square's 3D style. Came out pretty well, actually: ![]() Anyway, this movie apparently comes out in like 2 or 3 days (even though the English version has been pushed back), so sit tight. --- Saturday, September 10, 2005
mobile17 anniversary.Permalink: 9/10/2005 09:17:00 PMA week ago I quietly released a new version of mobile17. Now that the bugs seem to be worked out (more or less), I'm pleased to announce that earlier today, the counter on its homepage hit 300,000 tone/graphic creations since mobile17's original transition from smashTheTONES. Hoorah! UPDATE: By complete coincidence, today is also mobile17's four-month anniversary. New features and sites coming soon. Sit tight. Link --- Wednesday, September 07, 2005
More Google Maps errors.Permalink: 9/07/2005 10:11:00 PMI was looking through Google Maps trying to direct my friend to a restaurant and I noticed an area that's completely wrong. 1. Woodbine Ln. -- This road ends in a circle. (in other words, It's a dead-end.) Google Maps says this keeps going back to the main road. The funny thing is... this was probably the original plan for the road (as it looks like some of the land for the task was cleared) but the work was never completed. 2. Jones St. -- It says this goes around the corner at the end... which is actually a driveway... and does not line-up with the map. 3. The road to the right of Woodbine isn't even mapped. (it's fairly new, I think) Link The iPod NanoPermalink: 9/07/2005 05:00:00 PMAlthough I expected to see the iPod Nano announcement today, I was shocked to find out that it's replaced the iPod Mini. I think that was a huge mistake! They had such a short life-span on the shelves and came in all of those colors... what's Apple thinking? It was probably a difficult business decision... the Nano must be cheaper to produce and expand... as the tiny hard-drives utilized by the Mini have their limits. There's clearly something that we don't know about that. My review of the Nano is that I initially thought it looked cool, but girly. When I saw that it came in black, I changed my mind... but only for that color. Overall, I'm not a huge fan of only taking certain songs with me on the road, though, since I've been spoiled by a full-size iPod with my entire library on it... so this isn't for me. Neither is the Motorola iTunes Phone. What's a shame is that the Shuffle still needs a screen... it's not an expensive addition and would look great... even an OLED screen or even one from a classic iPod. The shape wouldn't have to change, as there's plenty of space.

Sony Ericsson K750i/W800i... The Perfect PSP Companion!Permalink: 9/06/2005 02:54:00 AMThese phones have the same memory stick slot as the PSP. You can use the phone to move files around and listen to your PSP music's and watch supported videos. You can even take pictures on the phone and view them on your PSP's beautiful screen, and use your phone's web browser to download files when you're away from Wi-Fi Hotspots. Is this a match made in heaven? :) The W800i should be out in the US within a few weeks. No plans to release the K750i here in the States right now, but you can import them from Europe through eBay and the like.

"Gas Prices Drive Man to Commute by Horse"Permalink: 9/05/2005 04:14:00 PM"He said he and his co-workers had been talking about rising fuel prices, and he joked that he would ride his horse to work if gasoline ever hit $3 a gallon.... He said he was only five minutes late riding his mare, Patty, to work.... While he worked, Patty waited patiently, eating hay out of the back of a truck." This man is a hero. (P.S. This is my 250th Blog Post!) :) Link Windows Zen.Permalink: 9/05/2005 01:55:00 AMI saw this while I was at Stop'n'Shop. (haha, Family Guy fans rejoice... S&S actually exists in New England)

Ellen Feiss...Permalink: 9/04/2005 04:57:00 AMHere's a funny Wired News story from 2002 about our favorite Mac stoner... Feiss' ad on Apple's website has now returned as the top hit on Google in response to the search item "stoned chick." Google's search algorithm ranks hits according to the number of other pages linking to it containing the search terms, among other things. Apple's page makes no mention of drugs, naturally. -- Link Poor Ellen... I'm sure she just loves the negative, geek-based attention. She has a cult-like following... http://www.google.com/search?q=ellen+feiss -- even a Wikipedia article. Haha, one of the top links was for a site where users made their favorite Ellen Feiss ad knock-offs. My favorite was this one, based on this flash video at ThreeBrain. (which, by the way, is NOT SAFE FOR WORK. Haha, it's not really safe for anything... so stupid.) Here's another video they did. ![]() I'm done. --- Saturday, September 03, 2005

The Saga of the EV-1Permalink: 9/01/2005 05:12:00 PMA few years ago, GM introduced the EV-1 electric car and the Chevy S10 electric truck to comply with California's energy laws. (which insisted upon a certain number of zero-emission vehicles) However, once GM found a way around the law, by donating electric golf-carts to local neighborhoods... they snatched the cars back from their owners, who offered thousands of dollars to keep their cars. GM wanted Eletric Cars off the road, so they crushed them. ![]() ![]()
