Found a problem with my Mac Pro.

Permalink: 8/29/2006 10:58:00 PM

Even when an audio device isn't selected, there's a constant, noticable "BLAAAHHHHH" noise in the background.
Almost like a loose connection?

What really sucks is if I hook up my stereo and turn THAT up, it amplifies the music, AND that sound... so if nothing's playing that's all you can hear.

Clearly a defect, I'm not sure what to think about it. Anyone else having this problem? E-mail me.

UPDATE: Apparently this is an issue outside of my Mac Pro, and probably with my house's wiring or other devices interfering... etc. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86655

My friend's "MacBook Pro" loves Half Life 2!

Update!
My friend just bought a 2.16GHZ MacBook Pro and it played Half Life 2 beautifully. (at 1440x900!) He was actually kind of shocked that it responded better than his 3.6GHZ tricked out desktop PC. Now he doesn't have to bring that to college for games! :D

There's no HDR support on the notebooks (obviously) but big deal considering how much power's crammed into that tiny machine! :)

My "Mac Pro" loves Half Life 2.

Buying this machine to replace my older Mac and my "Gaming" PC was the best decision, ever.

I ran the HL2: Lost Coast "graphics stress test" and got an average of like 31.65fps at 1900x1200 (!!!) on my 23-inch Cinema display!

The game plays flawlessly even with like all of the graphics turned up. This thing is bitchin'!! I've never had a computer that could play games this fast at resolutions half that!

Oh, I'm running the basic Mac Pro setup... the one they have at the store. With Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2, 32GB partition. Pics are from my cellphone so they kind of suck... but you get the idea! If you need a gaming PC, and a sweet Mac, buy a Mac Pro.

...but that's not a problem is it?
Here is the old version (1.3.4) that's awesome, and free of limitations!
Thanks to Nate.

Mac Pro Migration

Permalink: 8/21/2006 05:56:00 PM

Reasons I upgraded to this machine:
a) Speed
b) Hoping to replace my Mac, and my PC
c) Didn't need to keep using a portable as a desktop
d) Expandability? Can probably add a second drive to use as a backup medium or RAID array.

Brought it home, plugged it in, hooked a FireWire 800 cable up between the PowerBook and the Mac Pro, and off the migration went!

I've never used that before, but I thought I'd give it a shot. It really does a great job!! The only thing I had to reconfigure was my Screen Saver, and all that was was reselecting it from the list. All of the Network, Desktop, and other System Preferences were there and set, and everything was just as I'd left it. Bravo Apple! Even my fonts and Applications had been copied.

So, it came time to setup "Bootcamp"... and get started with Windows. All I really use it for is Half-Life 2, but whatever!

The installation was pretty straight-forward. Download from http://www.apple.com/bootcamp/, Install from the Package, Run from the Utilities Folder in Applications, and follow the instructions. You'll need a Blank CD and also a Windows XP CD with Service Pack 2 on it. It will not work without SP2... I tried and got this:

So, as I *cough* download Windows XP w/ SP2 *cough*... I wait. Hopefully they'll let me Activate it with my legitimate serial number. Otherwise, I really think this is a fabulous machine and its definitely a great idea for anyone looking for serious power, flexibility, and the stability/great-features of Mac OS X. :)

Laughing Squid reports LinuxWorld's age restrictions.

This sign probably went up from people like me showing up in t-shirts, shorts, and sneakers with messy hair and a, somehow aquired, "free pass" to the show. (via one of those coupon codes that are always floating around, haha)

Oh well! It's actually kind of a shame that they would actually put something like that up. A lot of staff and visitors always seemed to get a kick out of the fact that a handful of young people were there.

I wonder if I could actually still get in since I am somewhat of a "business professional"? I guess? ;)
